How Do Ratcheting Wrenches Work?

Ratchet wrenches use a gear and pawl mechanism to create a ratcheting motion in one direction while allowing the wrench to spin freely in the other. As the wrench is turned, the pawl locks on each tooth of the gear, creating increasingly high amounts of torque within the socket.
