8 Best Pick and Hook Sets for Precision Work

Interestingly enough, the best pick and hook set is usually the set which has a special tool that you need right now. To that end, you should look for a complete set that includes all of the commonly used items.

The length of the shaft and feel of the handle are going to be important, especially when working in confined areas. Hardened alloys will provide you with less flexibility and higher tensile strength, and be sure that each tool is long enough to to get into areas where your fingers can’t reach.

These tools are easy to overlook when building a complete tool collection, but nothing will take their place when you need one. You won’t see Snap-on or Matco pick sets on this list (along with their prices). While great tools, they’re overkill for 99% of individuals.

Pick and Hook Set Reviews

#1 – GearWrench 84000D 7-Piece Hook and Pick Set

best-pick-and-hook-setWe’re big fans of GearWrench tools and their 8400D pick and hook set is no exception. This seven piece set includes a 5″ Cotter Pin Puller, 4″ Hose Puller Pick, 4-1/2″ Awl, 3-1/8″ Mini Full Hook,  3-1/8″ 90° Mini Hook, 3-1/8″ Straight Mini Hook, and  3-1/8″ Mini Offset Hook.

The three larger tools measure 9-1/2″ in length, while the smaller ones measure 6-1/2″.

The included blow molded case keeps everything nice and organized and fits well in most toolboxes. Manufactured in Taiwan, the set just feels much higher quality than your typical made in China set. If you prefer US-made, check out the Channellock and Grace USA sets below.

Gearwrench pick set reviewThe dual-material handles are comfortable to hold and don’t allow much slippage. Not quite as “grippy” as Snap-On, but definitely more affordable. Great for removing seals, O-rings, cotter pins, clamps, hooking up springs, scribing, or as a hole punch.

While heavy duty for what they are, don’t try to use these as pry tools as that’s not what they’re intended for. A couple users have reported that the smaller picks actually came out of their handles but admittedly, they were using them for things they probably shouldn’t have.

The larger picks on the other hand, will put up with more abuse. Great value overall making it obvious why this is such a popular set.

#2 – TEKTON PNH90102 5-Piece Pick and Hook Set

tekton pick and hooksTEKTON is well-known for producing high quality tools at reasonable prices, and this set is no exception. Even better, unlike their imported tools, this set is manufactured entirely in Michigan using only USA-sourced materials.

Included are four picks (straight, 45-degree, compound, and 90-degree) plus one 130-degree hook, giving you good versatility for different applications. Each tool features a sharp 30-degree tapered point that keeps strength close to the tip while maintaining precision.

What sets this apart is the AISI 8650 steel shaft hardened to 50-54 HRC (that’s professional-grade metallurgy). The blade base includes two “wings” that help resist twisting or pulling out of the handle, addressing a common failure point in cheaper sets.

The nylon handles resist fuels, oils, and solvents while providing excellent grip. The classic square handle design with contoured sides allow for good grip and are comfortable enough for extended use.

Each tool measures 6.6″ long (3.6″ handle, 3″ blade). At only a slightly higher price point than TEKTON’s imported tools, this set justifies the cost with superior materials and American manufacturing.

#3 – Channellock HP-4A 4- Piece Hook and Pick Set

mechanics-pick-setWhen most people hear the name Channellock, they only think of pliers, yet this quality four-piece precision hook and pick set is proof that they’re capable of far more.

Heat-treated alloy steel construction, zinc plating, and high torque acetate handles give these tools excellent durability and resistance to corrosion.

Included in this USA made set are the A180A small 180 hook, A902A small 90 hook, APRBA small complex probe, and AWL2A two-inch round awl screwdriver. There is no pouch or holder included so plan keeping them loose in your tool chest drawers.

For the price and the fact that the set is made in America, it’s one of the best values around. While only four tools are included, they are the most commonly used.

Keep in mind this is a “precision” set so total length of each tool is only about 5-1/4 inches long with the handles being about 2-1/2 inches of that.

Even though these tools have excellent, durable tips, one issue has come up. A few users have complained of the tools showing signs of rust after a while. The circumstances behind these rust reports are unknown and this doesn’t happen to everyone, so use extra care when storing.

#4 – Mayhew Tools 60003 CatsPaw 4-Piece Mini Hook & Pick Set

mayhew pick and hooksWith chrome-plated, fixed blades made of heat-treated alloy steel, this four-piece set is a great addition to your precision tool collection. Each piece measure 6-1/2 inches with the handle taking up 3-1/2 inches of that.

The complex hook, curved hook, 90 degree hook, and straight hook’s blades all extend completely through the ABS plastic handles to ensure they won’t come loose. The handles themselves are well-crafted to provide a non-slip grip without extra coating.

When used as intended, these tools will last a long time and are quite sharp upon arrival. They’re also backed by a limited warranty against defects. Be warned that these tools can bend or break when used improperly, just as with any hook and pick set.

#5 – Grace USA HP6 6-Piece Hook and Pick Set

pick-hook-set-reviewsThis company isn’t well-known outside of gunsmithing enthusiasts, but their 6-piece hook and pick set is a great introduction.

Made in the USA, these picks are made of chromium-vanadium 8650 alloy steel with a black oxide coating for durability and resistance to corrosion. Each tool is about 5-1/2 inches long, with the handle being 2-1/2 inches of that.

The handles are hardwood and have been hot stamped with the size and angle for easy reference. Included in the set are a 1/8-inch small scribe, 30 degree bent pick, 90 degree bent pick, 180 degree hook pick, 180 degree loop pick, and double bend pick all in a vinyl carrying pouch.

Grace USA hook and pick holder
Optional holder

An optional bench block holder (currently out-of-stock) made out of neoprene rubber is also available made to fit this exact hook/pick set.

No tool set is perfect, but the HP6 comes pretty close. In fact, the single biggest complaint has been that the tools can be a little too sharp upon arrival.

The tools are perfect for precision work and can be used for everything from removing O-rings to cleaning guns. Note that the tools are small for a reason and may be damaged or even break when used improperly.

#6 – SK 4-Piece Hook and Pick Set

sk pick and hooksSK brings their reputation for quality hand tools to the pick and hook category with this well-balanced 4-piece set. The selection includes a straight pick, offset pick, 90° pick, and hook, covering the most commonly needed configurations for automotive and electronics work.

The ultra-fine tips can precisely probe, pierce, pry, pull, and locate small parts in tight spaces, making them ideal for separating wires, scribing marks, removing small fuses, and retrieving O-rings or washers that fingers can’t reach.

SK’s signature SureGrip handles feature knurled design with triangular grip texture specifically engineered for large torque applications. This allows you to work comfortably with speed and precision, even when your hands are wet or oily.

#7 – Craftsman CMHT65073 4-Piece Precision Pick and Hook Set

craftsman pick and hooksWhile Craftsman isn’t quite the same brand as it was when their tools were made in the US, it still have some good values to be found, with this set being one of them. This popular selling 4-piece precision set includes a straight pick, full 180° hook, 90° hook, and small angle 35° hook (a good selection that covers most common tasks).

The standout feature is the stainless steel construction that provides superior corrosion resistance compared to chrome-plated carbon steel alternatives. This makes the set particularly valuable for automotive work where exposure to moisture and chemicals is common.

At 6.87 inches long, these tools are slightly larger than other “precision” sets and those with larger hands will appreciate the thicker handles. Craftsman’s bi-material handles provide comfort and control during extended use. The ergonomic design reduces hand fatigue while providing secure grip, even in oily conditions typical of mechanical work.

At their price point, they can actually handle more abuse than you would think, as long as you keep in mind they are hooks/picks and not prying tools. Whether you’re replacing O-ring washers, separating wires, or removing stubborn fuses, this set makes quick work of challenging jobs.

The tools come with Craftsman’s full lifetime warranty, showing their confidence in build quality. For the money, this is one of the better sets out there.

#8 – Ullman CHP8-L 8-Piece Hook and Pick Set

hook-and-pick-setUllman has been making quality precision and specialty tools since the Great Depression, and one of the best pick and hook sets today is still made at their facilities in Connecticut.

Each tool is made of high carbon polished heat-treated steel, measures 9-3/4 inches long, and has a comfort grip that will give you more leverage and a better grip.

The large selection of hooks are great for retrieving dropped nuts and washers, and the picks are perfect for cleaning around fasteners, placing nuts, and more.

The set comes in a clear vinyl pouch, but you will probably want to store them in your tool chest for easier, more convenient access.

On the downside, the pick shafts and handles are not a single piece, but you can correct that with a drop of Gorilla Glue or metal adhesive. This will prevent the tips from unscrewing from the handles as some have noted.

Hook and Pick Buying Guide

Tool Length and Shaft Considerations

The length of your picks and hooks directly impacts how useful they’ll be for different jobs.

Mini Picks (5-6 inches)

These excel in tight spaces and precision work, but they might not reach deep enough for some applications. Perfect for electronics work, small appliances, and detail work where you need maximum control.

Standard Length (6-8 inches)

These hit the sweet spot for most home projects. You get good reach without losing maneuverability, making them ideal for general automotive work and household repairs.

Long Picks (9+ inches)

These give you better reach for automotive work and accessing recessed areas. If you’re working on engines or large machinery regularly, the extra length becomes invaluable.

Shaft thickness matters too. Thinner shafts get into tighter spaces but bend easier, while thicker ones provide more strength. That’s why we really like the GearWrench set as it offers options for different situations.

Handle Design and Comfort

Since you’ll often be doing detailed work for extended periods, handle comfort isn’t just a luxury, it’s necessary for getting the job done right.

Dual-Material Handles

The GearWrench set’s rubber overmolding gives you confidence even when your hands are greasy. Once you try quality dual-material handles, plain plastic feels cheap and slippery.

Grip Features

Look for knurled sections or textured grips. When you’re trying to remove a stubborn O-ring, that extra grip control makes all the difference.

Handle Shapes

  • Square handles distribute pressure better and are more comfortable for extended use
  • Round handles are smaller and easier to manipulate in tight spaces
  • Hardwood handles feel great and provide excellent grip, though they need more care

For most people, handles around 3-4 inches long provide the best balance of leverage and control.

Steel Quality and Durability

This is where you really get what you pay for. We’ve seen too many cheap picks bend or break when you actually need them.

What to Look For

  • Chrome vanadium steel offers excellent strength and wear resistance
  • Proper heat treatment (50-54 HRC) keeps points sharp while preventing brittleness
  • Quality coatings like stainless steel or black oxide protect against corrosion

Professional-grade metallurgy makes a huge difference in tool longevity. The TEKTON set uses heat treatment that rivals tools costing twice as much. Meanwhile, stainless construction handles automotive chemicals without rusting.

Red Flags

Avoid tools that are too hard (they’ll snap) or too soft (they’ll bend and stay bent). Quality manufacturers know how to strike the right balance through proper heat treatment.

Set Size vs. Individual Tools

We’re big believers in complete sets, but here’s how to think about sizing:

4-Piece Sets

Most 4-piece sets cover about 80% of typical jobs with:

  • Straight pick
  • 90-degree hook
  • 180-degree hook
  • Complex probe or awl

This is the sweet spot for most DIYers and homeowners. The Channellock set is a perfect example of how much you can accomplish with just four well-chosen tools.

6-8 Piece Sets

Larger sets add specialized angles that become valuable as you take on more varied projects. If you find yourself reaching for picks regularly, the extra options are worth having. Some of these sets also provide tools in different lengths.

Individual Tools

Only makes sense for replacing broken tools or if you have one specific recurring need. You’ll pay more per tool and might find yourself wishing you had a different angle.

Our advice: Start with a quality 4-piece set. If you find yourself using them frequently, upgrade to a larger set later.

Country of Origin Considerations

This might matter more than you think, especially if you plan to actually use these tools regularly.

Made in USA

American-made tools usually offer:

  • Superior steel quality and heat treatment
  • Better quality control
  • Lifetime warranties that manufacturers actually honor

Yes, they cost more upfront, but they last significantly longer. Unfortunately, many American brands are now made oversees. Whenever possible, we try to point out “made in the USA” products.

Taiwanese Manufacturing

Taiwanese manufacturing represents good middle ground by typically offering better quality than budget alternatives while staying affordable. Taiwan has decades of experience manufacturing quality tools.

Chinese Manufacturing

Quality varies wildly depending on price point. Some budget Chinese tools work fine for occasional use, but don’t expect them to hold up to regular abuse.

Bottom line: If you’re only going to use picks occasionally, a quality Taiwanese set works fine. If you’ll use them regularly or professionally, American-made tools are worth the investment. The lifetime warranties tell you everything about manufacturer confidence in their products.
